There is something I have noticed and maybe you have noticed this too. It’s not the weather or something in the news. It has something to do with appreciating life.
Appreciating Life After Something Happens
Many parents or people in general appreciate what they have after a traumatic incident or when things in their lives go amazingly well. Only then do they find the time to reflect on their lives because a specific incident triggers the importance of their life. They give thanks for the life they have and the people around them.
I too am like this. I see and hear about tragedy around me every day. Homeless people stand on the corner of intersections asking for money or just help. Regardless of the reason that they stand there it still is tragic.
I keep thinking of how to write this in such a way that the point I am trying to make is so impactful to each person that reads this that it changes the way they think about their life. If what I write has an impact in your life then I know it was something more than my writing that affected the way you view life.
To be honest I have been a blessed individual and I have been blessed all of my life (in the good times and bad). I think I truly began to reflect on my life while in the Army when I was blessed enough to have a few guys that stood by me through the Army and have remained my friends over a decade later and I have not replaced them.
I was blessed to find my wife who lived two states away who is the woman of my dreams, and there is no amount of detail that could express the love I have for her or the joy she has brought to my life. My wife has given me two beautiful, thoughtful and healthy children. Every day I make a conscious effort to be the best dad I can to my children and best husband I can be to my wife.
Being a teacher, parent and father to my children is yet another blessing that I have been given. I put them to bed every night. We each say our prayers and then I hug and kiss both of them. I tuck them in and tell them I love them. I am a father that knows every minute how blessed I am to have my family.
I am blessed to have a job. Given it’s not a job that gives me a ton of joy but it helps to support my family. The job I have is flexible which gives me the opportunity to make it to special events and participate in the lives of my children.
I don’t have a traumatizing story as to why I reflect on how blessed I am. I truly try to take in every moment with my family no matter how small a moment it appears at the time. I am not a perfect parent or spouse, but I will strive everyday to be one.
I think life speeds up after you graduate high school. All these special life moments happen so fast and either we miss them or don’t appreciate them because life and stress get in the way. Work overwhelms us or some days just seem so stressful that we can’t wait for the day to be over. I would just ask that you reflect each day on your blessings. I believe the more we see all the blessing around us we will appreciate them more.
